Crash Time: Autobahn Pursuit (known in the United Kingdom as Crash Time and in the rest of Europe as Alarm für Cobra 11: Crash Time) is a mission-based driving game released for the PC in 2007 and Xbox 360 in 2008, and a sequel to Alarm für Cobra 11: Nitro. It is based on the German television series Alarm für Cobra 11 – Die Autobahnpolizei, and features several characters from the show working their way through criminal cases set in fictitious versions of the city streets of Cologne, and the autobahn in North Rhine Westphalia. The developers created a 'Pathfinder' to ensure that the AI vehicles do not always follow the same path during a pursuit. It was not received well by critics, with graphics and plot being of concern. Four sequels have been released on Xbox 360 and through online content provider Steam.

Gameplay[edit]

The player assumes the role of one of several officers in the fictional Cobra 11 team, from the television series Alarm für Cobra 11 – Die Autobahnpolizei, a police unit in Germany assigned to patrol the Autobahn and other road networks. The player usually takes the role of either Chris Ritter or Semir Gerkhan, but there is one early mission (Beginner's Luck) where the player takes the place of a contender. The officers are charged with stopping and questioning suspects about various criminal activities. The game presents the player with a series of fictional 'cases' which need to be solved in order to progress. The cases themselves are set in 2007.[1]

Game Name: Crash Time 5 Undercover RePack Release Date: 2012 Publisher: DTP Developer: Synetic Genre: Racing Platform: PC Windows DESCRIPTION Own the road! Experience non-stop racing action and embark on a high-octane manhunt with thrilling car chases and lots of explosive missions!

The game was developed for the Xbox 360 by Synetic and published in North America by Crave Entertainment with a release date of 5 August, 2008.[2] In Europe the game was published by RTL Playtainment, a subsidiary of RTL Television, and was released on 9 May, 2008.[2] The PC version was released on 7 November 2007.[3]

Using an improved version of the Crash Time: Autobahn Pursuit game engine developed for Mercedes-Benz World Racing,[4] Synetic also developed a 'pathfinder' system to allow AI controlled vehicles to choose their own route to a destination, so that no two pursuits are the same. According to Andreas Leicht, product manager at Synetic, creating the 'pathfinder' system was the most difficult and time-consuming part of the development cycle.[4] The scenery runs at a polygon count of 1,200,000 triangles per scene[4] with a damage model based on physical impulses during a collision, in which the vertex basis is deformed. In addition, visual damage to the animated model is triggered if the deformation exceeds specified limits, meaning that the cars not only deform but that parts can break and fall off.[4]

City design for the game was based on real life architecture using industrial buildings, inner city districts and railway stations as models, although the game does not contain an entire real city. The development team sourced several thousands photos, texture DVDs as well as researching books and videos to obtain a 'real' look for the cities.[4]

The IGN Xbox Team rated Crash Time: Autobahn Pursuit as one of the five worst driving games on Xbox 360, mainly referring to the German police setting to the game, and the poor voice acting in the English-language versions.[12] In a review for IGN by Ryan Geddes there was criticism that what could have been an exciting game has been reduced to the mundane.[7] The difficulty curve was labelled 'inconsistent', with 'cakewalk levels being followed immediately by nearly impossible ones'.[7] The 'Cases' mode was criticised as the player cannot tell how many missions are left until the case is completed, making the planning of a game session impossible. The missions have been described as boring and dull.[6]

There was praise for the crashes,[7] and it has been noted that the explosions are poor, but their resulting debris is a nice touch. Francis Clarke of AceGamez stated that the graphics are not acceptable for a modern game with textures not standing up to close scrutiny, and a clipping effect when driving through fields.[13] There has been criticism that the vehicles in the game pop-up, which is emphasised by the speed at which the player is travelling.[6]

Sequels[edit]

Crash Time 2: Burning Wheels[edit]

On February 27, 2009, IGN reported that a sequel to Crash Time: Autobahn Pursuit is to be released for under the names Crash Time: Burning Wheels in Europe and Crash Time 2 in the United Kingdom. This game will feature more open world environments where the first game is more linear.[14] An overhead map will be included for the first time in the series, as demonstrated in the demo available on Xbox Live Marketplace.[15] New escort missions have been confirmed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), as has the feature that 'players can drive onto a field and plow into cows, which shatter into 'cartoony' t-bone steaks upon impact'. The ESRB has also commented on mentions of drugs, prostitution and one instance of sexual innuendo in reference to the new escort style missions.[16]Crash Time 2 was released on Xbox 360 in Europe on 27 November 2008,[17] and on Steam on 27 August 2009.[18]

Crash Time 3: Highway Nights[edit]

At the 2009 Tokyo Game Show, the trailer for Crash Time III (known as Crash Time: Highway Nights in the US) premiered,[19] This game features over 200 km of roads and over 32 km² of playable environments, and the player has the chance to choose their own way to proceed through missions, for example instead of simply blocking off an opponent the player can choose to immobilise the vehicle in order to complete the mission. The story follows the pursuit and investigation into a terrorist unit. Crash Time 3 features night time missions for the first time in the series.[20] A single player demo was released on Xbox Live Marketplace on 9 December 2009.[21]Crash Time 3 was released on Steam on 25 November 2009,[20] and on Xbox 360 in Europe on 27 November 2009.Also available on cloud based gaming - Onlive

Crash Time 5 Release Date 2020

Crash Time 5 Release Date

The Crash Time series of games has been quietly bubbling under the radar around the world for the last few years. Generally, if you’ve bought one of the games, you know not to buy another one, as without exception, they’ve all been pretty dire affairs. The series is based on the German cop show Alarm für Cobra 11, which has been much more successful than the games, and which is currently in its 33rd season on RTL. Known for its almost movie-quality crashes and stunts, the show features the Autobahnpolizei as they try to bust drug rings and solve crimes by going really fast.

Alarm für Cobra 11: Undercover was released in Germany back in October, and when we received a press release talking up the new features that appeared to be being introduced to the international release, we thought that things would be different this time around. No more poorly-translated voiceovers. No more floaty cars that felt like they were made out of foam. No more unpolished, throwaway gameplay that’s easily a generation behind almost every other driving game available to purchase right now.

But that isn’t the case. Despite all the talk, Crash Time 5: Undercover is nothing but a translated version of the German game. The game takes place in Germany, the police cars all have the original Autobahnpolizei markings, and the voiceovers are nothing short of abominable. The voiceover artists’ inability to understand what apostrophes mean just makes them seem terribly wooden. “I have to drive to you? What is that all about then?” is just one example of what appears to be dialogue lifted from a play being put on by sixth-graders.

Gameplay itself sees you driving as either Semir Gerkhan (or “Samir”, depending on which part of the game you’re playing, given that it never decides which is his actual name) or Ben Jäger. They’re cops tasked with going undercover to overturn criminal gangs. To do this, they need to take part in missions to convince their crooked bosses to let them work closer to the action, and win races that take place on fully decked out racetracks against others who are looking to move up the chain. In one mission you’ll be tearing along the autobahn, trying to reach checkpoints before the timer runs out, and in the next you’ll be blistering around the Nurburgring. It doesn’t make much sense, but there you go.

If the voice acting was the only problem, Crash Time 5: Undercover would be a passable game, but it isn’t. Turn your vehicle more than 15 degrees to the left or right, and the framerate goes through the floor. Crash a criminal’s car into a wall or a roadblock and you’ll damage him, but there’s a good chance that his vehicle will then disappear and reappear (going at full speed, of course) 300 yards down the road. Play a waypoint challenge and you’ll beat it by a full minute, only to play the next one and find that the slightest delay whilst travelling (and we’re talking about losing the backend for half a second) means that you’ve no chance of getting to your destination before you run out of time. The same goes for races. You'll win one by a mile, then lose the next - against the same opponents, with everyone using the same vehicles - by half a lap.

Even with all that in the negative column, some fun driving would still rescue the game somewhat. Guess what? Big shocker, we know, but the driving is awful. The cars all stop ludicrously quickly as if you were travelling at 10 mph even though you were doing 150, and they float, flip, spin, skid, and barrel along as if the developers have never actually seen how cars act in real life. A 100ft drop? Just drive down it, it’ll be fine. A minor bump in the road? Take-off time! Add that to the fact that in this “open world” (which looks relatively convincing at times), you can’t drive off-road for more than a second before the game assumes that you’ve botched it and need a reset, and you’ve got a title that has very, very few redeeming qualities.

Crash Time 5 Release Date Release

When you’re winning a race by a lap and a half on the fourth lap and a ninja – and we’ve got no idea who he’s supposed to be in relation to the storyline - appears to tell you in a European-American accent that it’s 'boring being in the lead for so long,' you can't do anything but agree.

Conclusion

Crash Time 5: Undercover is a wretched game that should be overlooked by everyone. Cheaply made, but not particularly cheaply sold (it’ll currently cost you a somewhat insulting £25 in the UK), the game has next to nothing that can be used to recommend it to anyone other than the clinically insane. When you can buy Forza Horizon, Forza Motorsport 4, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, or any other driving game for less or very similar money, we don’t see how the publisher even imagined that this would be good enough to bring home the bacon. Avoid.
